When it comes to kitchen trends, it can be difficult to choose something that’s on trend but doesn’t date. While no one thinks about their kitchen going out of style as they’re renovating and redecorating, certain trends don’t stick around as long as others.
I’ve found that if you don’t go all in on a trend and just sprinkle it through you designs, your interiors can still look fresh and modern for decades. Whether you get bored and want a change in the meantime is on you! (I know someone who re-decorates everything every three years without fail, personally, I prefer to make things last).
Kitchen decor is one of those things people browse even when they’re not looking for a change. I know, I’m one of those people. Pinterest mostly shows me other people’s kitchens and a few pictures of bedrooms. I know – I’ve got a problem.
This means people can be tempted into redecorating when they really don’t need to. To be sure you choose kitchen decor that won’t make you envy those home improvement blogs, you need to pick things you absolutely love if you don’t want to get bored. This is an area where it’s important not to settle or compromise. You should always be in love with how your home looks.
How to update your kitchen with a style that stays on trend
I know I’ve already mentioned this, but I’m addicted to Pinterest – and for a good reason! Pinterest will help you narrow down your design ideas and create mood boards full of your exact taste. I’d spend plenty of time planning how you want things to look before finalising the design. Then I’d consider the below:
A stylish kitchen floor
A kitchen floor can make or break how good a kitchen looks. It’s the biggest expanse of uninterrupted design and everyone who enters your kitchen will look at it. I’d pick some ceramic kitchen tiles for your floor, then complementary tiles for your walls. At the moment patterned tiles are what everyone is after, and I believe it’s a trend that’s here to stay. Patterned tiles are lush, and plain tiles have paved kitchen floors for at least 30 years now. It’s time for beautiful patterns to have their day!
My favourite design is a black or charcoal background with a white repeating pattern overlay. As soon as we’ve finished saving, these will be my choice for our new kitchen floor.
Neutral kitchen cabinets
It’s important to know neutral doesn’t mean beige. Instead, it means muted tones that are complementary to many other colours. You could go with a dark grey, a muted teal or even a pastel blue if you get the shade right. Neutral doesn’t have to be boring, it just has to pull your design together.
Block colour walls
Walls don’t seem to be wallpapered in kitchens any more. Everyone seems to prefer block colours painted directly on to the plaster, and I have to agree with them. I keep seeing kitchens with three white walls, then one black one with a shelf full of plants. You have to be brave if you’re painting anything black, as it’s hard to cover, but I believe taking the plunge is totally worth it!
Plants! Plants! Plants!
I keep seeing memes about millennials buying an excessive amount of plants, but honestly, it’s not just my lot funding the garden centres – everyone is at it! If you’re a bit rubbish at keeping your greenery alive, there are some really convincing faux plants on the market now, so you can create leafy look with none of the responsibility. Plants won’t go out of style, because if you’re someone who is actually good at looking after them, they’ll live for years and years.
