6 Tips to Create a Cool and Comfy Bedroom this Summer

AD

Sprawling summer days are easy to enjoy during the sunshine hours, but when the sun goes down but the heat sticks around, it’s a totally different story! Getting a good night’s sleep shouldn’t be hard – even in the summer. You just need to prep your bedroom to help you drift off on those hot summer’s nights.

Below are some of my tried and tested tips for creating a cool and comfy place to sleep in the summer.

Pick a Comfy Bed

If your bed frame creaks or your mattress is lumpy, you don’t stand a chance at sleep. A pleasant place to sleep is top of the list whenever it comes to bedtime tips. Invest in a new bed if you need to, I promise you it’s worth it.

Whether you’re wistfully browsing beds in Wigan or futons in Fife, shop around, visit showrooms and pick what’s best for you. Ask around for recommendations, but remember that when it comes to beds, other people’s preferences might not match yours. Taking the time to choose the right beds for your personal comfort and sleep style can make a significant difference in the quality of your rest and overall well-being.

Refresh Your Bedding

You can’t get a new bed without updating your bedding. Put the winter quilt away and get a lighter blanket on your bed. If you’re prone to hot flashes in the night, you can buy cooling gel pads that are specifically designed to top your pillow to cool you down.

Team up with new bedding for an extra-refreshing end to your day.

Ventilation is Key

There is nothing worse than a bedroom that feels stuffy from the heat. Getting a great aiflow can cool the room and bring a refreshing breeze. Open windows and doors in the bedroom as well as other rooms in the house. We open our bathroom and landing windows when we come to bed then keep our bedroom window and door open to allow some movement of air.

Get the Gadgets

If airflow isn’t enough, consider investing in a free-standing fan. This will cool a target area (i.e. your bed) and cool you down when you’re in that spot. You might also want to invest in a humidifier. These don’t actually cool the room down, but can help with allergies and nasal congestion brought on by the open windows and increased air-flow.

Install Breathable Blinds

The trouble with summer’s nights is that it stays hot until late, making it difficult to sleep, then it gets light early. Bright morning light can flood your room and wake you up, so you need to block it if you want to protect your sleep. Go for breathable blinds and curtains. They’ll reduce the amount of light that gets in your room, but they won’t retain the heat like some thicker alternatives tend to.

Go Oldschool

If nothing else works, it’s time to do the tricks of our grandparents, and their parents before them. A bowl of cold water and a wet flannel will do the trick every time. Although this can be an overly damp solution if you don’t wring out the flannel well enough, it will never fail to cool you down. Put on some light pyjamas that leave your skin showing and dab the wet flannel on your head, neck, back and tummy. As the water evaporates, the heat should go with it.
