Whether your child succeeds or fails at something, always try and point out the positives. For instance, if they practised really hard for a spelling test but didn’t get a good score, let them know that you are really proud of them for trying their best, as that is all you can ask for. Consistently trying hard is far more valuable to a child than occasionally doing well. What’s more, if you put too much pressure on them to get good grades or perform well, they will become anxious and afraid to try.
As hard as it is for parents to watch their children become increasingly more independent, it’s actually crucial for their confidence. With that in mind, try and let your child figure out problems on their own sometimes. If they think they always have you to rely on and bail them out of a sticky situation, they will never develop the skills and confidence to solve problems on their own. Remind them that they are a child and you are an adult, so the problems they can solve on their own will be very different to the ones that you can solve, but that doesn’t mean they’re failing.
To the same degree, you need to teach your child that mistakes are inevitable; all human beings make mistakes sometimes. The trick is to learn from these mistakes.
