They say love knows no bounds, so it figures that if you fine the one, distance won’t change a thing. Lots of my friends are in and have previously been in long distance relationships. I’ve seen them work, and I see them working now. In most cases, one will eventually move to be with the other, but every single time, distance is never an issue.
Don’t get me wrong, they miss one another when they’re apart, but weirdly the time apart seems to strengthen the bond. I’d like to think if my husband had to work away for any length of time, the distance wouldn’t come between us and we’d be able to make to most of our relationship in new settings.
Why Long Distance Relationships Work
After seeing them in action and talking to my friends about how it works for them, I thought I’d share what I’d learnt. Basically, if you’re meant to be, then you’re meant to be. If you’re still looking for love, don’t rule out people who live far away. Explore outside your comfort zones, date Edinburgh singles, date further afield. Take a chance on happiness.
These are the reasons my friends swear their long long distance relationships work. Sure, it’s never nice to miss someone, but the payoff always seems to be worth the wait!

You get to see new places
One of the main pros I hear cited time and time again is the exploration aspect. If your partner lives in another city, it opens up a load more exploration possibilities. You’ll be able to see things you’ve never seen before and go places you’d never have even considered. The same goes for when you bring your partner back to your home town. Long distance relationships widen your world.
One of my friends signed up to The Edinburgh Dating Site when she did a masters up there. She only ever needed to stay for short periods as most of the study was done remotely, so moving her whole life would have been pointless. her thinking was that she’d be up there often enough that she’s like a bit of companionship. It worked out well for her because she’s still seeing a gent she had been chatting to. Fingers crossed for a Scottish wedding!
Of course, dating sites cater for all ages, not just those trendy youngsters. In fact, my friend keeps nudging her mum to join Mature Edinburgh Dating, jokingly saying they can go on double dates and split the petrol costs for the journey!

You still have time to be yourself
Sometimes people can be swallowed up in a relationship – especially if it’s a new romantic connection. Long distance relationships force time apart, meaning you’re free to do everything you used to before you started dating. Friends won’t feel neglected and you will still be able to get away with going to bed at 7pm on a Thursday!
There’s less pressure to be perfect
A lot of my friends who have been in the long-distance setting have joked about how they don’t have to shave their legs very often! Instead of feeling the pressure to always be preened, they can relax when they know they won’t be seeing their beau.
Time together is even more special
I know from my own experience, if myself or my husband spend a rare weekend away without the other, we miss each other terribly. When we return, we can’t wait to see each other and hear about what the other has been up to. Apparently this is magnified tenfold when you regularly spend days or weeks apart. You don’t get chance to get comfortable and spending time together is always a treat.
It’s not forever
Usually the long-distance thing isn’t for long. Either one of you has to be away because of circumstantial reasons such as work, or you’ve started dating when you’re already living apart and one of you moves. The distance is the test, but the relationship is the success. If you’ve found the right person, the long-distance relationship will last the duration and you’ll be living in each other’s pockets in no time.
