Moscow is a fascinating city and probably doesn’t attract as many international visitors as it should. Those of us who love and know this special city know why it is so special. If you have come to the end of a memorable Trans-Siberian railway journey from Beijing, you really should make some time to spend a few days in Moscow before you leave for home. Doing your research and checking the weather beforehand will enable you to hit the ground running as soon as you arrive and enable you to see and do more.
I have attempted to include a number of attractions and activities that should be easily doable within a 3-4-day timespan, 5 days would be better time allowing. If you have just completed the long and fascinating Trans-Siberian railway Beijing to Moscow trip, your tour operator may be able to facilitate an extended stopover in Moscow for an additional fee.
Must See Sights in Moscow
I have compiled a list of what I think are must see places in Moscow, this huge city is blessed with many notable sights and attractions, so I will keep it brief and cover the most prominent.
- Red Square – Probably the most visited place in all of Russia, Red Square is usually the first stop for most tourists. Words cannot really adequately describe the sheer scale and magnificence of Red Square. You can actually feel the history of the place without even knowing all of its history. NOTE: May be closed on occasion for military events such as the Victory Parade and Military Orchestra tattoo. Check dates in advance.
- Lenin’s Mausoleum – Bang in the centre of Red Square, you can walk past and pay your respects to the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin. Remember that photography is not allowed here.
- Basil’s Cathedral – Situated in the south part of Red Square, the cathedral actually houses a museum. If time is an issue, just admire from the outside.
- The Kremlin Museum Complex – Ancient city and citadel that is still in use today and contains the Armoury Collection (Royal Clothing and Chariots), a number of churches, the Diamond Fund, Bell Tower and Patriarch Palace. It is recommended to take a guided tour if you plan to visit this place. You can also visit the Kremlin Palace which is the official residence of Vladimir Putin.
The four notable sights above should be enough to keep you occupied for at least 4 days. If you can stay in Moscow longer, you can explore in more depth.
Restaurants and Hotels
Moscow is home to literally hundreds of top restaurants and hotels that are too numerous to list and regardless of whether you want to pay £20 or £20,000, you will find what you are looking for in this huge city. If you have a particular restaurant or hotel in mind, speak to your Trans-Siberian tour operator who should be able to help you with the necessary bookings.
Moscow is one of the most underrated cities in the world, and if you haven’t yet been, put it to the top of your 2019 or 2020 travel plans.
