Must-have Kitchen Equipment

The kitchen is among the most important rooms in any home. It’s here that you’ll prepare all of your meals. The facilities it provides will therefore make a significant difference to what you eat, and, by extension, to your overall quality of life.

I like investing in gadget that help me make treats nice and easily. Things like waffle makers mean that all I need is some Belgian waffle mix and a spare ten minutes to make a plate of treats for the family!

But to do its job properly, your kitchen will need to be stocked with the right equipment. Let’s consider a few of the more essential items!

Must-have Kitchen Equipment

Non-stick Pans

To cook on the hob, you’ll need a frying pan. Many of these come with a coating of Teflon or some similar substance, which ensures that your food doesn’t stick. You will, however, have to be a little delicate about how you wash your pan: harsh scrubbing brushes and metal spatulas will scrape off the coating and ruin the pan. A better option for semi-experienced cooks comes in the form of a cast-iron skillet; it’ll heat consistently, wash easily, and last for decades. Measuring Cups

If you want to be precise about your quantities, you’ll need a set of scales. But for most cooking jobs, estimating is fine. That’s where measuring cups come in. They’ll allow you to scoop up a portion of rice and dump it into the saucepan without fear that you’re going to get more (or less) than you bargained for.

Tongs

Picking up and turning hot food requires the right tools. A set of high-quality tongs will be enormously helpful. With them, you’ll be able to flip over the stuff that a spatula can’t handle, like sausages and noodles.

Freezer

Your freezer isn’t just for storing the meals from your supermarket’s freezer section. It’ll allow you to keep food that otherwise might be wasted for months. Overripe bananas can be peeled, stuck into the freezer, and then blended into a delicious smoothie several months later. Leftover portions of chili-con-carne can be sealed in Tupperware and frozen for a later occasion. And, of course, you’ll need a steady supply of ice cubes for all of those summer garden parties – which makes a freezer an essential item of catering equipment.

Good Quality Knives

Blunt, lightweight kitchen knives are bad news for all sorts of reasons. Firstly, you risk injuring yourself with them. Secondly, you’ll brutalise your ingredients, inflicting blunt trauma rather than slicing through. Thirdly, you’ll take minutes doing your chopping badly rather than seconds doing it well. Given that almost every recipe calls for a knife, the sense in a good-quality specimen is near-inarguable.
